There seems to be a wide agreement that primarily hydrangeas are used for hex-breaking, using the bark in particular which can be sprinkled around your property or carried with you in a spell pouch (Cunningham’s Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs).

Planting hydrangeas around your home act as a natural protective boundary (much like blackthorn & hawthorn does). Having a vase of hydrangeas is said to reverse bad luck or hexes.  Hydrangeas are also said to help us set healthy boundaries for ourselves, do this by planting them around the perimetre of your garden, having them on your altar or carrying them in a spell pouch on your person. They can also be used in redirecting curses & psyhic attacks. (The Magic of Flowers)
