Hurricane Joaquin

breelandwalker:

For my witchbabies on the U.S Eastern Seaboard, there is a hurricane expected to make landfall this weekend.

Please pay close attention to your local weather station and heed any evacuation warnings, as this storm may strengthen from a Category 1 to a Category 2 before it hits landfall. (For reference, Katrina was a Category 3.) High winds and heavy rainfall are expected all along the east coast from the Carolinas up through New York and Massachusetts, with the heaviest impact to be felt around the Outer Banks and the Chesapeake Bay Area.

If you haven’t done so already, you may want to take the following steps, especially if you live near the coast:

  • Clear your yard of anything that might be sent airborne, such as furniture, toys, kennels, etc. Bring pets inside and make provisions for their comfort and safety.
  • If you are in a flood plain or low-lying area, you may want to acquire some sandbags in case of flooding.
  • For first-floor dwellings, you may want to pick up plywood to cover your windows. Note: TAPE WILL NOT WORK FOR FLYING DEBRIS.
  • Make sure you have enough nonperishable, no-cook edibles for at least a day or two, as well as a few gallons of drinking water. If the power goes out, try to avoid opening your fridge or freezer. The food can keep safely for 24-48 hours (especially if frozen) if you keep that cold air contained.
  • Have battery-operated lanterns at the ready. Candles are not advisable due to the risk of fire. Keep in mind that emergency services are going to be very busy. Don’t take unnecessary risks.
  • Do not travel unless absolutely necessary. If you have somewhere safe to go that is sturdier or further inland than your current dwelling, you may want to think about heading there on Saturday or first thing Sunday morning at the latest.
  • If your local authorities say you need to evacuate, DO NOT WAIT. Pack the necessaries (including any medications you need) and GO. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to leave and the more dangerous conditions will become.

Everyone, please keep an eye on the skies and stay safe!
