Southern: “Who is that behind you?”
She walked down streets and never feared a thing. She stood in crowds and didn’t mind their closeness. In fact, no one seemed to stand terribly close to her the whole night.
The cashier at the fast food joint smiled and then faltered for a moment.
“Ma’am, who is that behind you?” she asked in a shaky tone.
Without looking she grinned wickedly and shrugged. “Oh, no one.”
She took her food and walked away and back down side streets until she arrived at her door. Her shadow fell upon the wall beside her door and another fell just along behind it. It stood a foot taller than her and sported massive antlers.
She glanced back at the faint black haze where He stood. Her smiled broadened as she stepped inside feeling safe and guarded.
“No one at all,” she said and closed her door to the outside world.
