spirit work help???

i want to contact my father someday, but i worry about having other spirits mess it up?? i use my pendulum occasionally and i was talking to a spirit name Alec (it was a while ago i don’t remember their name exactly but it was close to that). anywho does anyone know some tips on how i could really call out to my dad and my certain offerings?

also what are some ways that i can protect myself when doing spirit work?

would it be best to do it out of my house because my mother worries about a spirit sticking around my house and starting to mess with us.
