NEW ENGLAND FOLKLORE: Fortune Telling with a Key
Mental illnesses don’t take a break for the holidays. Here’s to all those suffering during the “most wonderful time of the year”
“OK. I lied earlier. THIS was the highlight of my parenting week. Sending my 13-year-old daughter into the store for (whispers) “feminine hygiene products,” and having the following text exchange. I died, she gave me life, I died again. And she drew an illustration, on the spot, ON HER PHONE, to drive her point home.“
– Belinda Hankins, shared on Facebook.
Okay, I have a little story to tell you.
You must know that I am a librarian at a business college in Hungary, Budapest. The library is in a building that once belonged to the Russian army and was used at barracks and it is rumored that the basement was a jail and there were tortures too. There is no evidence though.
I was always told by my co-worker how tanks would up and go around the building and that which gates they used. We still joke about how the building is haunted.
But here comes the strange part. There are magnetic gates in the library to prevent patrons from stealing. They also function as a counter and when someone goes through it, you can hear clicking sounds as it counts. However, especially in the morning and the late hours the magnetic gates start clicking as if someone is going through them but there is no one to be seen. And the counter also goes up after these incidents, I’ve checked it out of curiosity.
Computers start up on their own, lights flicker, the smoke detectors go off with no reason and the fire gates close by themselves, the printer spits ink sometimes if you’re standing close to it even though that shouldn’t be possible. Everything can be explained with that the building is old and the systhem malfunctions, and I would believe it if I’d have never seen the magnetic gates clicking and counting invisible beings.
