ramblings-of-a-wayward-witch:

There’s a thing  called a “ME” candle. A Me candle is dedicated to yourself, usually burned when your personal energy is low.

Usually a pillar candle, it can be any color but my personal preference is white. You can dedicate the candle any way you like, but a simple way is to just hold it and focus on your intention of infusing the candle with your energy. It helps to do this on a good day when your energy is high!  You can dress the candle with essential oils that boost energy – like eucalyptus, lemon, grapefruit, cedarwood, peppermint.  Any citrus oils are great for boosting energy. Of course, it’s ok to NOT use eo’s if you don’t have them or can’t afford them.

You can also carve sigils and/or bind runes in the candle pertaining to boosting your energy. (this is actually my preferred method – it kind of makes it more personal)

You can burn your candle on low energy days, when you’re doing a spell/ritual to boost the energy of said spell. Or even whenever you feel the need.

Happy Witching , lovelies ❤

Yule  & The Winter Solstice 101

themori-witch:

Summer is over, Winter is in full swing, and Yule is upon us.

image

Yule, pronounced “yool”, falls on the 21st of December in the Northern Hemisphere, a date that is also known as the Winter Solstice. In the Southern Hemisphere (below the equator), Yule falls on the 21st of June.

The Winter Solstice is the day of the year when the night is longest and the day is shortest. After the solstice, the days begin to grow longer and the nights shorter.

Some Historical & Cultural Stuff:

Yule is the time of the year when the “dark half” of the year ends and the “light half begins”.

Until the 16th century, the winter months were infamous for being times of famine in Europe – most cattle were slaughtered during this time so that they did not need to be fed during the winter. The feed was needed for the mouths of the farmers and the people. This meant that the solstice was a time when meat was plentiful, and is the reason why a lot of the celebrations surrounding this time of year centre around feasting and merriment.

In pre-Christian Scandinavia, there was a feast (named the Feast of Juul) that lasted for twelve (12) days. It celebrated the rebirth of the sun, and from this feast came the custom of burning a Yule log.

In ancient Rome, the Festival of Saturnalia (famously referenced in an episode of The Big Bang Theory) was the pillar of solstice celebrations. It was used to honour the God of agricultural bounty, Saturn and lasted around a week. Saturnalia was characterised by feasting, debauchery and the exchanging of gifts.
Does that sound familiar? Well, it should! Many of these customs were absorbed and assimilated into Christian Christmas celebrations upon Emperor Constantine’s conversion to Christianity. This was done to make the conversion less of a shock.

An Open Letter To Young Witches.

mothmaam:

This is a rewrite and more organized rewrite of a post I wrote 8 months ago discussing why younger witches shouldn’t take offense if an older witch refuses to teach them and is getting notes again so here y’all go, a better written post.

Dear young witches who who are 13-17 or even younger. Do not take offense if an older witch who is a legal adult won’t teach you.

They’re legally not allowed to without your parent’s/guardian’s permission because you’re a minor and this law is in most countries and states (I know it’s illegal in the United States). Reason why, it counts as religious teaching (even though witchcraft itself is not a religion but a practice) and I know it sucks but that’s how it is.

If your parent/guardian doesn’t like you doing witchcraft or you’re in the woods we cannot even teach you in secret because that can look really bad; your parent/guardian could make up lies about us and get us in trouble with the authorities because they don’t want us teaching you or us being around you if they find out. I can already hear you saying “But I could defend you!” I’m really sorry but the judge isn’t going to believe a person as young as you. It’s a sad truth but minors are rarely listened to in court, especially in cases where it is parent versus teacher.

So, again, please don’t take offense if an older witch turns down teaching you the craft. We don’t hate you but we have to keep ourselves out of trouble and not end up arrested because your parents/guardians make up a lie.

However, you can still learn the craft without a mentor, it can be difficult but it can be done. Utilize Google, (Google is a modern witch’s best friend) it can lead you to various sources to learn from without a mentor. Be your own mentor if you can’t get one or wait until you’re no longer a minor (18 years of age in most countries) to seek a mentor.

In the meantime don’t take offense off an older witch won’t teach you because, again, us protecting ourselves from the law comes before us sharing and teaching our knowledge of the craft with others.

So I needed some room for my witchy shit

a-magpie-witchling:

a-magpie-witchling:

Because I had been ignoring it for WAY too long and although most of it was scattered around the house, the crap that you can’t hide, the stuff that makes people go “so a witch lives here?” was all over a table I apparently claimed as “witch territory”.

image

Call me Semiramis I-don’t-need-an-altar-I’m-fine-thank-you Magpie

But where, oh where, could I store all my witchy shit?

The bedroom?

The living room?

The garden?

image

The closet that I haven’t cleaned in a decade?

image

Ok, so I rolled my sleeves up and set to work. I threw away the useless stuff and kept the memories of my long passed youth (? wtf Rami you’re 23

BUT.

Oh boi.

While I was cleaning I found some bad shit.

And I’m talking about some REALLY BAD SHIT.

Memories and mementos of things I had forgotten, from people that had hurt me as much as they possibly could without killing anybody. At least not literally.

Objects directly connected to them. For you to have an idea, the MOST HARMLESS of the things I found was a CD that my then-21-yrs-old physically, emotionally, and psychologically abusive boyfriend gave me when I was 15 (yup, those numbers are right).

And this is just the teeny tiny tip of the iceberg

Needless to say, I had one hell of a panic attack.

Now, the things per se weren’t bad, but the things they were connected to and the things they reminded me of were too fucked up for me to deal with alone. NO WONDER I had blocked this place from my mind and had postponed dealing with it for a DECADE.

So, what I mean to say is that I needed to cleanse this space before any of my witchy stuff touched it.

No, SCRATCH THAT.

So, what I mean to say is that I needed to cleanse this space before any of my witchy stuff touched it.

I know, I’m hilarious.

THIS SPACE NEEDS A SPIRITUAL DISINFECTION.

I threw some lemon incense in there (lemon=protection, motherhood, sheltering), but… it wasn’t enough so

IT IS TIME TO BRING OUT THE SECRET WEAPON.

Ah, now THAT looks like a cleansed space!

A E S T H E T H I C C

I’ll give you a walk around my witchy supplies someday, and I’ll also explain the Stag figurine there (I’m a secular witch, as y’all know, but if I were to follow a Spirit (never a god), it would be Great Stag, the master of the Wild Hunt, emblem of virility, untamed wilderness, respect, willpower, adaptability, aid, caring, salvation, honor, and king of the Fae). This is me acknowledging his power and thanking him for his cooperation.

So anyway, what I really wanted to show you was how to cleanse a space where trauma has left its mark.

You can use things like

-Incense

-Smoke cleansing

-Selenite

-Hematite

-Rosemary

-Wind chimes

-Mint

-A poor innocent cat

But most importantly!

-Laughter

It’s nothing new that laughter can cleanse the soul, same as singing.

Laugh in the face of your trauma.

Show it that it can’t own you anymore.

If you’re safe now, banish its leftovers with a giggle, exorcise yourself from the painful memories.

Do not let it steal and hog space in your house and your mind.

Do not let it transform you into nothing but Something That Happened To You.

Let yourself be free of it.

At the end of the day, it’s not just a cabinet or a room or a house that we’re cleansing.

It’s ourselves.

Y’all think being in a goth relationship means wearing white makeup together but Mary Shelley lost her virginity on her mother’s grave so maybe step it up.

Mary Shelley carried her husband’s heart around and lived in a crypt after he died. No one will ever be as goth as Mary Shelley.

She also wasn’t carrying around, like, a mummified heart. Her husband’s heart had calcified, meaning it had grown bone within itself and possibly around itself, and it is this heart of bone which she carried. When she was young she carried it wrapped in a silk pouch, and when older it was kept in her desk, wrapped in a page from his poem Adonais. Adonais was one of his last poems, in which a deceased poet’s subjects (nature, Spring, the stars) mourn him, and long to join him in death. Then the narrator tells them do not mourn, for he has gone beyond where the minds and emotions of humans matter, to the Natural Spirit that is the source of all beauty.

Of his poems, it is this which she wrapped his heart in. There is none. more. goth.
