husfreyja-elin:

“I am the forest,
I am an ancient.
I treasure the stag,
I treasure the deer.
I shelter you from storm,
I shelter you from snow.
I resist the frost,
I keep the source.
I nurse the earth,
I am always there.
I build your house,
I kindle your hearth.
Therefore, you people,
hold me dear.”

Some Crystal Misconceptions

iolitewitchcraft:

Diamonds Aren’t Rare

  • actually true, they aren’t
  • BUT
  • gem-quality diamonds are rare. There are three main factors that contribute to rarity
  • SIZE – big diamonds are way more rare than little tiny ones
  • COLOR – colorless diamonds are more rare than brown diamonds, and fancy-colored diamonds are more rare than colorless diamonds
  • CLARITY – diamonds that aren’t full of crap are more rare than diamonds with lots of crap
  • I could go on for a long time about this so send me an ask if you want a full post

Fake Citrine/Burnt Amethyst

  • no
  • yellow/orange quartz = citrine, whether it’s natural or treated
  • it isn’t fake
  • citrine is often heated amethyst whether it comes from nature or a lab anyway
  • there are some citrines that were never amethyst, but many were

Copal Is Fake Amber

  • copal is young amber
  • amber is OLD, guys
  • 1,000,000+ years old
  • they will both float in saturated saltwater.
  • amber is more resistant to chemicals because it’s gone through polymerization over time
  • don’t drop your amber/copal in solvents because chances are it’s copal

Don’t Clean Crystals With Soap

  • soap is good
  • most common crystals can be cleaned with soap
  • use gentle soap though, none of that orange gritty stuff that everyone’s dad had at one point
  • rinse off the soap when you’re done
  • check if your crystal is water soluble before cleaning though
  • and be careful with unusual and delicate specimens

Heating And Irradiation Are Bad

  • heating and irradiation enhance the color of your crystals
  • almost every sapphire and ruby in the lower to mid-range market has been heated
  • most other stones too
  • it doesn’t hurt the stone. I promise
  • it just makes them prettier
  • the earth does it to her crystals too

Treated Stones Are Fake

  • nope
  • treated stones are usually still whatever they were before they were treated
  • unless it’s a variety call based on color or something but y’know
  • heated topaz = topaz
  • aura quartzes are extra pretty because of their treatment
  • it’s cool if you don’t want to use treated stones but many people like them
  • treated stones are beautiful and not fake
  • but make sure the treatment is DISCLOSED unless it’s routine (and therefore assumed)

Blood Diamonds

  • it was a problem
  • but not much anymore!!!!
  • there’s a fun international thing called the Kimberley Process (2003)
  • diamonds can’t be exported from their origin country without a clear paper trail back to the mine
  • diamonds are probably the most ethical gemstone purchase you can make today actually
  • (a more in-depth discussion here)
  • there’s no equivalent process for colored stones
  • blood emeralds, anyone??

Garnet Is Corundum

  • Corundum has THREE MAIN VARIETIES
  • just THREE
  • ruby (red), padparadscha (orange-pink), and sapphire (every other color)
  • these have subvarieties (star ruby, yellow sapphire, etc etc etc)
  • emerald and garnet are not corundum
  • (garnet is a mineral group!!!! it’s not even a species, much less a variety)
  • not everything is corundum

I’ll add on to this in the future! Let me know if you have questions, I’m happy to expand on anything in this post or any other crystal info that you aren’t sure about 🙂

So y’all know how much of a slut I am for brooms. A friend of mine, who has requested I call her Alaric in this post, made one hell of a broom, I asked if I could share this with you guys. Here’s what Alaric has to say about this piece:

“It’s made of pine, pine straw, Taiwanese rain tree, and unnamed local Thorned tree. There’s the quartz on the top of the shaft secured by wax that is been melted with thorns and ash. Four hag-stones are secured by wire around the top of the broom. Each of the thorn branches were tied together in groups of 3 to 4 while ecstatically chanting this at night:

‘In my thorny spiders web,
I catch what /I/ wish to catch.
Let loose, what /I/ wish let loose.
And /I EAT/ what I wish to eat.’

The other broom materials are put in later. It’s purpose is to literally rip, sweep, and ensnare. Iron nails are put into the brush. It’s use is protective, for cleaning a space, and as a weapon.
For instance, while sweeping around the house, I say:

‘I sweep up all illness,
I rip it from the walls,
I tear away all sickness,
I scrape it from the halls. There is no room for misery, there is no room for pain,
I am the master of this house-
Let nothing ill remain.’

I say it with power and conviction and make my intentions /very/ clear. It’s meant for use of unwelcome spirits as well.”

Hi, Alaric here! There isn’t much else to say here, my freind @leaping-hare-witchery, covered it perfectly. I’ve been away from tumblr for a while and I’ve never once attempted a blog for my craft, but I’m interested in the community so I thought I’d try my hand!

I think the biggest thing to note is that the thorn I used turned out to be hawthorn.

The way I came upon it was this:

Walking through my neighborhood forest…

(The kind of thicket no one cares for; The place for those small groups of life closed in on by modern living; The place the growing world forgot; The place where things are hidden, criminals seek out, the ignorant dump, the homeless sleep; The place where bitter spirits lie in wait, and the place where I am free: my home. )

.. and calling out. I can’t remember my chant, but like the best of them, it came from nowhere and it came from the soul. I was looking precisely for thorns. At the time, my hopes were small: anything from brambleberry bramble to a length of Florida Catbrier.

However, as I proceeded down the path I was set to follow, none of these usually over-abundant ‘weeds’ could be found. I was starting to give up when I stumbled out into a clearing.

There sat the most beautiful thorny tree: short and twisted. Wrapped around its base was a snakeskin. Make of that what you will…

The tree spoke to me saying: Take all from me that is dead.

It was amazing. In this end it benefited us both: giving me what I needed, and making room for new wick branches in the spring.

As I took the branches, my finger pricked.

Guyssss! The friend who made this broom has finally made a tumblr! Go give her a follow and check out what’s to come.

One of the most wonderful witches I’ve ever met has joined tumblr. Welcome aboard!
