Florence and the Machine at last night’s Spotify event in Brooklyn. As Florence began to sing Sky Full of Song a literal storm began to hit, she never faltered and embraced the storm.

Watching this was an ethereal experience

this queen literally summoned a storm during her performance when will your fave ever control the weather with such accuracy

Fast forward a bit to when the wind starts, it’s so cool!

Also I love when the cymbals fall, it’s so perfectly timed lol I love it

Ouija/Spirit Boards/Talking Boards

Ever use a pendulum? Same exact concept is being used with a Spirit Board. They’re tools, not immediate links to demonic forces. As long as you being specific about who you want to talk to, take precautions to protect yourself like basic warding, you will be fine. There’s nothing more dangerous about Ouija than pendulums, tarot, or any other tool of divination. If you’re not comfortable with this as part of your practice, that’s fine, but avoid telling others it’s dangerous and further perpetuating myths that originated not from the Pagan or Occult/Witchcraft community, but the larger mainstream community of the 1800s. Actually the real reasons the Ouija Board or “Talking Boards” were demonized is hilarious

Black vs. White Magic

The idea that Black is associated with evil and White is associated with good is racist at best (early references to Black Magic referred to Voodoo or practices of Black Folk as “evil”). At worst, it’s a fundamental misunderstanding of the properties of magic. No magic is good or evil – just the actions of the witch and how they use it. Please stop calling it B&W. Magic is such a spectrum, this is ridiculous. And it further suggests that Black PoC doing magic should be feared. [2]

Voodoo

Which brings us to Voodoo/Hoodoo. Voodoo is a valid religion. Hoodoo is an initiated practice. Neither are evil, they are however closed paths that should only be practiced by those who are being properly trained and initiated in these paths. THIS IS NOT BECAUSE IT’S DANGEROUS. This is out of respect for a very structured, traditional, and proud religious and spiritual practice, and a marginalized culture who are still fighting to avoid having their people, their culture and their roots demonized.

Firefighter demonstrates how to put out a kitchen fire

Reblog to actually save a life

To explain. The latter works because you’re cutting off the supply of oxygen to the fire and suffocating it

as opposed to slapping oxygen inside the pan with the downward motion

Reblogging, because this is so important. When I was learning how to cook for myself in my tweens, I had at least a five years of fire safety seminars from school drilling this into my head, and I STILL had that instinctive put-the-fire-out-with-water reflex. Didn’t even think. I saw our oily burner catch fire after frying eggs, whipped around towards the sink for water, and my brain immediately screamed NO!!! NO WATER!

I mean that fire safety stuff straight up bitchslapped me out of REFLEXIVELY setting my house on fire. I found a pot lid and inched it over the burner before turning off the heat. Even if you think you know this stuff, panic is powerful shit. Make knowledge more powerful.

I have been working on this comic “Undergrowth” for the past month and I’m so happy to finally be able to share it with you!! This is the reason I haven’t been posting as much art on tumblr. I was very inspired by people who depict personal growth as a potted plant, and I wanted to do my own take on that idea: I think of it more as an entire forest or ecosystem within a person.

I hope reading this will inspire you to keep improving as a person even though it’s a process that is so difficult and convoluted.

…They allowed the dogs to tear your body, your veins and arteries with
sharp fangs.
But I stole a silent heart, dried it in the winds and kept its rhythms
at the depths of my bitter tears, none of which I’ll drop into this
sinful world. My clothes were soaked with your blood – and this fading
carmine I’ll be worn until death, like the frozen embrace of a dead
man.

Is it okay to learn sign language and cast silent spells with just that? Or will it be seen as disrespectful in some way?

I don’t normally answer these because it’s open to all to give their own 2 cents (especially since practice and belief is so varied) that said, I think you should do what ever. I’m not part of the non hearing community but I see absolutely no downside to learning sign. I think everyone should learn to sign.

As a hard-of-hearing CODA born and raised in the Deaf Community, I just want to say that learning sign language (ASL) ONLY for casting silent spells is remarkably disrespectful to the people who depend on it, and its history. Please, please don’t learn ASL simply because you want to include it in spells. It was created as a way for Deaf people to communicate effectively with each other and Hearing people, as well as being created as a way to show their Deafness isn’t something to pity or be considered a handicap. It is literally their identity, and a language born out of this necessity isn’t something that should be learned for the aesthetic. Learn it because you want to communicate with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing in that community, not because you think its neat or an aesthetically pleasing idea for spellwork and witchcraft.
