Decolonize Witchcraft and Spirituality!

That means:

  • Respect closed practices! Either go through the proper channels to be initiated or leave them alone!
  • Respect indigenous and diasporic cultural traditions! Many of these cultures were nearly wiped out by colonization. Respect the boundaries of what you can and can’t practice as an outsider.
  • Purchase crystals from reputable sources! Some crystals are mined unethically and through minimally-paid or slave labor.
  • Stop supporting shops and authors who appropriate from closed cultures! It should be obvious, but don’t buy dreamcatchers from a non-Native person and avoid metaphysical authors who perpetuate racist stereotypes about marginalized religions and magical traditions.
  • Listen to and prioritize witches of color/practitioners of color in dialogues about racism, cultural appropriation, and exotification in the magical communities.
  • Examine your own craft and see if you are unintentionally appropriating any cultures
  • Educate yourself on practices outside of your own so you don’t unintentionally invalidate or appropriation marginalized religions and spiritual practices.

It’s almost as if nobody wants to admit that they might not be prepared to do the work it takes to love somebody. And it can be laborious. To be intimate with someone who is flawed (which is the standard) requires us to expose our own flaws. We don’t talk about the heavy responsibility of that. We don’t talk about how we’re too lazy or too cowardly sometimes. We instead accuse love of being elusive. It isn’t. It is omnipresent. It asks us to be better people. And sometimes we flat out refuse.

Honestly Tim Curry was great and all, but in terms of actual formative impact on my life I think nothing tops the unicorns from Legends.

This was my first major exposure to the concept of unicorns, and I loved this movie so much and watched it so many times, that traditional unicorns with their deer or goat-like proportions just look wrong to me. XD Except for in the animated movie of The Last Unicorn, because everyone has spindly legs in that art style, even the Red Bull. But as far as my subconscious mind is concerned, unicorns are supposed to look like horses. Not goats, not ponies, not even sleek Arabians with their dish-shaped faces and shiny coats. QUARTER HORSES. Ye standard warmblooded work horse. And the bigger the better, honestly. Later on (but still as a kid) I discovered draft horses and fell in love with their muscles and lustrous manes and feathered hooves. My ideal unicorn now would probably be dappled Percheron with a horn as big around as my arm.

Look at that. Truly a mystical creature of secrets and beauty.

I am strongly in favor of all of this and will make notes

Please, especially new people, keep in mind that the pagan & witch communities can have gross creeps in it like any other religions or practices no matter how much they like to talk about how “spiritual” they are. If someone creeps you out or says or does something that makes you super uncomfortable, please dont overlook that bc you figure that’s just how it’s supposed to be for paganism or witchcraft. Their spirituality or practice doesnt make weird advances at you any less weird. Please keep yourself safe!!
